BOOSEY & HAWKES INSTRUMENTS
The closure of the Boosey & Hawkes musical instrument factory in 2005 marked the end of large-scale instrument manufacture in the UK. A collection of the instruments made by Boosey and Hawkes was started in 1859 and has now found a new home in the Horniman Museum with a display of over 100 items from the company’s instrument collection and archives. Tom visited the Museum to look round the exhibition with the curator for the collection, Dr. Bradley Strauchen, and to catch up with some of the people who worked for the company.

The Black Dyke Christmas Carol is more than just a brass band CD. This inspired project, put together by Alan Jenkins, includes an abridged version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol which is juxtaposed with appropriate Christmas music reflecting the mood of the text from the band.

‘Tis A Gift is brought to you by the 2006 U.S. Open Champion Brass Band, Brass Band of Central Florida. The band visited the U.K. recently and competed in the Brass in Concert (www.brassinconcert.com) Championship where it carried off the awards for Most Entertaining Performance and Best Percussion Section.

Christmas Tidings is the latest release from The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army and includes repertoire that they will be performing at the Celebrating Christmas concert in London’s Royal Albert Hall next Thursday.

The Twelve Days of Christmas captures a festive pre-Christmas concert that was given to a capacity audience in the Floral Hall of The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden by The Royal Opera House Brass Soloists and sixteen members of the chorus.

Bones Apart are an all-female trombone quartet who have made a big impact in the world of brass since their formation in 1999. The group has been featured in national newspapers and international magazines and have established themselves as one of the foremost brass chamber groups. Their latest CD Enigma has just been released on the Egon label and we are delighted to add their name to the impressive list of artists contained in our catalogue.

Christmas is often a time when we catch up on our reading and a new book by Ronald W. Holz is sure to hold your attention for many an hour. Brass Bands of The Salvation Army is an impressive publication which has been extensively researched and painstakingly put together and is packed full of information including around 200 photographs and illustrations.

The St Dennis Band (Cornwall) was thought to have been formed in 1836 as part of the festivities in connection with the coronation of Queen Victoria and has continued to function by voluntary contributions up to the present time. Their first contest was in 1882 and this was followed by a series of contest successes covering all the ensuing years. Their contest were not confined to Cornwall . They had successes at Crystal Palace, Alexandra Palace and no less than twenty nine first prize winnings of the much coveted Prince of Wales Trophy held annually at the West of England Bandsmans Festival at Bugle.

2006 is the 125th anniversary year of Chatham Citadel Band of The Salvation Army and, to celebrate this landmark, the band will be presenting a concert at The Salvation Army Citadel in Church Street, Chatham on Saturday 16th September at 7pm. Although the band can be heard every Sunday when it takes part in regular worship, it is unusual for the band to give a concert in the Citadel in its own right.

Resident Conductor

The association was set up in 1946 to promote and further the interest of brass banding throughout the Southwest and foster the fellowship within the movement, and it is no mean feat that the association is still strong 60 years on.

The association is very active and currently has a membership of 66 bands. During the course of the year it takes on the responsibility of sponsoring contests throughout the South West. Over the past years it has promoted very successfully education and training events in the vein of conductors workshops, full band workshops as well as individual instrumental workshops, all of which have proved to be very popular with membership bands.
