Brass Band Recordings of the Year

British Bandsman CD of the Year is A Golden Year played by Black Dyke Band. Released early in 2006, A Golden Year is a record of some of the major works performed by the band in concert and in competition during 2005, its 150th anniversary year, and includes its winning performance, at the British Open Championship, of Bram Tovey’s A Night to Sing.

British Bandsman CD of the Year is Euphonium Virtuoso played by the much travelled Steven Mead accompanied by Brass Band Buizingen. Steven is a real global ambassador for the euphonium and this year has taken the instrument into even more uncharted waters having played solo at the Milan Fashion Show in September!

Brass Band World CD of the Year is The Heaton Collection Volume 4 on the SP&S label and played by Black Dyke Band. This, of course, is not the first time that a CD in The Heaton Collection has carried off a major award. The first release in the series (now known as Volumes 1 & 2) was named CD of the Year back in 2002 by British Bandsman. Volume 4 represents the final release in the series and completes the project of recording all th e brass band works of Wilfred Heaton.

In an unusual move, Brass Band World Solo CD of the Year is Caprice by the stunning young trumpeter Alison Balsom. Although Ms Balsom plays the trumpet on this CD and is accompanied by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra she first learned to play a brass instrument in Royston Town Band and still maintains contact with the band, popping in for a ‘blow’ from time to time!

All Brass Bands Radio

Brass bands in the British tradition are limited to cornets, flugelhorns, tenor horns, baritones, euphoniums, trombones, tubas (known as basses in brass bands), and percussion; but not trumpets or french horns, since they are orchestral and concert band instruments.

In UK bands compete against each other in contests and are graded according to their results from Championship Section (being the highest) to 4th Section, with a separate Youth Section (usually up to and including 19 years of age). The North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) championships are held for various levels of bands once a year in the US along with the US Brass Band Open Championships.

Competitions among bands usually consist of a performance of at least one of the following: a test piece (which may be set by the contest organisers or chosen by the band), a march, a hymn, or an entertainment selection. In British National Championships, only one - usually newly written - test piece will be performed by all bands.

Another long held tradition in Brass Banding is from the Salvation Army. The standard of playing is high and the Army operates bands at the international level, such as the International Staff Band, which are the equal of professional ensembles, though they do not participate in the brass band contest scene. Some professional brass players and contesting brass band personnel have come up through The Salvation Army. Sundays, this station plays just tracks from Salvation Army Bands!

The St Dennis Band (Cornwall) was thought to have been formed in 1836 as part of the festivities in connection with the coronation of Queen Victoria and has continued to function by voluntary contributions up to the present time. Their first contest was in 1882 and this was followed by a series of contest successes covering all the ensuing years. Their contest were not confined to Cornwall . They had successes at Crystal Palace, Alexandra Palace and no less than twenty nine first prize winnings of the much coveted Prince of Wales Trophy held annually at the West of England Bandsmans Festival at Bugle.
